Это подробный анализ работы для защиты научной степени «Якоб Буркхардт, философ и историк», которую защищали в Йельском университете в 1941 г. Автор работы – Джеймс Николс, преподававший во время обучения Зонтаг в Чикагском университете. На оборотной стороне некоторых листов с печатным текстом и сделанными от руки Зонтаг записями есть черновики письма от Филипа Риффа, согласно которым он передает работу на рассмотрение в качестве своей собственной. Судя по всему, эту работу так и не напечатали, потому что, возможно, текст Зонтаг оказался гораздо длиннее формата обычной книжной рецензии. Просто не верится, что текст писала 18-летняя девушка, показавшая настолько глубокие познания истории и философии Ренессанса. Из этого можно сделать вывод, что уже в то время ее ум полностью сформировался и что, в свою очередь, доказывает, что она была в состоянии спустя пару лет написать книгу «Ум моралиста». В этих ранних текстах угадывается будущий автор эссе, которые создали ее репутацию.
