Самуэль Чавкин, американский исследователь практики удержания от преступлений, издатель ряда медицинских журналов, посвятил свою книгу одной из наиболее изощренных и антигуманных форм нарушения элементарных прав человека — насильственному изменению его психики, сознания, индивидуальности. 1960-70-е гг. отмечены чрезвычайно интенсивным развитием нейробиологии, в рамках которой возникли и успешно развиваются принципиально новые направления, изучающие структуру и функции центральной нервной системы человека. Результаты этих исследований, как имеющие подлинно научное значение, так и представляющие собой скоропалительные, необоснованные или явно сфальсифицированные «сенсации», таят опасность их антигуманного использования отнюдь не в целях излечения различных психических расстройств, а в качестве средства «модификации поведения», отклоняющегося от стандартов буржуазного общества.
