История ордена Храма, выдвигавшиеся против него обвинения и его трагический конец оставили след в общественном сознании.
На этой исторической основе сформировались, распространились, а затем исказились мифы, предания и легенды.
Орден был создан в 1118–1119 гг. по инициативе нескольких рыцарей, участвовавших в крестовом походе, чтобы надолго воплотить в жизнь главную идею, связанную с защитой гробницы Христа в Иерусалиме и посещающих ее пилигримов. Орден обрел могущество и образовал по всему христианскому миру сеть обителей и хозяйств, которые собирали дая нужд Святой земли пожертвования и налоги.
Крах крестовых походов и гибель латинских государств Святой земли подорвали материальные и идеологические основы его деятельности. Орден Храма пал в начале XIV в. от рук короля Франции Филиппа Красивого.
