Великая хартия вольностей (лат. Magna Charta Libertatum, англ. The Great Charter) — грамота, подписанная английским королем Иоанном Безземельным 15 июня 1215 г. Написана на латинском языке, содержит 63 статьи. Подписанию В. х. в. предшествовало восстание баронов, которые были недовольны усилением королевской власти. В восстании участвовали также рыцари и горожане, выступавшие против налогового гнета, притеснений со стороны королевских чиновников и неудачной внешней политики короля. Большинство статей В. х. в., закрепившей временную победу баронов над королем, отражало интересы феодальной аристократии. В. х. в. гарантировала соблюдение королем феодальных обычаев по отношению к его вассалам — баронам, запрещала взимать субсидии с феодалов без их согласия, судить баронов иначе как судом равных им по званию пэров; она ликвидировала право короля вмешиваться в юрисдикцию феодальных курий и создавала комитет из 25 баронов, который в случае нарушения хартии королем мог начать против него войну… Всем свободным людям гарантировалась защита от произвола чиновников (из Большой советской энциклопедии).
