По другим версиям, причина войны связана с легендой о потопе, широко распространенной в Малой Азии; возможно, там случился разлив Евфрата, который нередко выходил из берегов. Намереваясь убрать негодных людей или, в соответствии с «Киприей», избавляя от излишнего бремени кормилицу-землю, Зевс решил устроить Илионскую войну с тем, чтобы смерть опустошила мир. Поэтому он и воспользовался ссорой богинь из-за яблока. Еврипид заимствует эту версию, и Елена в его пьесе, названной в честь красавицы, говорит: «Фригийцев он войну зажег, чтоб мать освободить от населения — Землю — чрезмерного и чтобы лучший грек был славою отмечен» (пер. Ин. Анненского). Очевидно, эти легенды родились из понимания человеческого несовершенства.
