В рамках данного исследования последовательно реконструируются три слоя восприятия Войн Роз: глазами джентри, живших во времена противостояния Йорков и Ланкастеров, с точки зрения англичан XVI в. и с позиции профессиональных историков.
За более чем пятьсот лет представления о Войнах Роз сделали почти полный круг. Современники принципиально не вникали в детали престолонаследия, уважительно относились ко всем королям и королевам. Они сетовали, что борьба за престол не лучшим образом сказывается на положении дел в королевстве, но не считали происходящее катастрофой.
В конце XV — XVI вв. конфликт Йорков и Ланкастеров все больше драматизировали и систематизировали. Шекспир прибавил полотну ярких красок, и следующие три столетия историки некритически воспроизводили драматическую версию тюдоровского мифа. В XX столетии стереотипы были сломлены, и в итоге исследователи пришли к тому же, что и современники. Как и людям XV в., нынешним историкам очень многое не ясно; подобно современникам они почти не критикуют участников конфликта; наконец, в оценке степени воздействия Войн Роз на повседневную жизнь исследователи теперь склонны полагаться на мнение очевидцев.
