Неолиберализм – теория, согласно которой рыночный обмен является основой системы этических норм, достаточной для регулирования всех человеческих действий,стал доминировать в мыслях и делах жителей большинства государств земного шара примерно с 1970-х. Распространение новой теории шло параллельно с пересмотром взглядов на права государства, когда проводилась приватизация, изменялась финансовая система, более серьезное значение стали придавать рыночным процессам. Государственное вмешательство в экономику было сведено к минимуму, но одновременно и обязательства государства, связанные с социальными гарантиями гражданам, сильно уменьшились. Дэвид Харви, автор книг The Condition of Postmodernity u The New Imperialism, рассказывает историю политических и экономических процессов, связанных с происхождением неолиберализма и его распространением по миру. Тэтчер и Рейгана часто цитируют в качестве основоположников неолиберального поворота, но Харви показывает и роль других государств, от Чили до Китая, от Нью-Йорка до Мехико, в этом процессе. Кроме того, он исследует сходства и отличия между неолиберализмом в понимании Клинтона и недавний поворот в сторону неоконсервативного либерализма администрации Джорджа Буша.
