Острый миелоидный лейкоз— разновидность злокачественного заболевания крови, поражающая миелоидную линию клеток крови.

Первичная профилактика— профилактика, нацеленная на предотвращение развития заболевания — как правило, наступлением на причину болезни.

Перспективное испытание— испытание, в котором группу пациентов отслеживают в течение какого-то периода времени (в отличие от ретроспективного, при котором изучают историю группы пациентов).

Протоонкоген— предшественник онкогена. Как правило, протоонкогены — нормальные клеточные гены, активация которых за счет мутации или гиперэкспрессии вызывает рак. Протоонкогены кодируют белки, участвующие в клеточном делении и дифференциации. К протоонкогенам относятся, например, ras и myc.

Рандомизированное испытание— испытание, в котором пациентов распределяют в контрольную группу или в группу, получающую лечение, случайным образом.

Ретровирус— РНК-вирус, который хранит гены в виде РНК, а не ДНК и способен за счет работы специального энзима — обратной транскриптазы — преобразовывать гены из РНК в ДНК.

РНК— рибонуклеиновая кислота, молекула, исполняющая в клетке несколько функций. Действует как промежуточный передатчик информации от гена к белку. Некоторые вирусы используют РНК, а не ДНК для хранения генетической информации.

Трансфекция— введение в клетку ДНК.

Трансгенные мыши— мыши, генетическая информация которых искусственно изменена.

Транслокация (гена)— физический перенос гена из одной хромосомы в другую.

Химерный ген— ген, создающийся за счет объединения двух генов. Может быть результатом естественной транслокации или же сконструирован в лаборатории.

Хромосома— внутриклеточная структура, состоящая из ДНК и белков и хранящая генетическую информацию.

Цитотоксичность— способность убивать клетки. Прилагательное «цитотоксичный» обычно употребляется по отношению к химиотерапии, которая убивает клетки, особенно быстроделящиеся.
