Традиционные теории и концепции психотерапии проявляют тенденцию, к тому чтобы непосредственный сенсорный опыт терапевта заменять представлениями, опирающимися на теории и таким образом создать, своего рода, иную реальность. Бэндлер и Гриндер подчёркивали однако, что все методы и техники НЛП, сформированы таким образом, что их можно применять в состоянии "вне времени". Опираясь на модели, дающие терапевту возможность заново организовать собственные процессы создания формы. Другими словами: все модели НЛП содержат структурные соответствия с чувственно воспринимаемыми процессамиздесь и сейчас в терапевтической ситуации [386].

Грегори Бейтсон, следя с огромным интересом долгие годы, за работой молодых исследователей, распознал необычайное значение этого нового подхода. В связи с этим он писал:

"Гриндер и Бэндлер столкнулись с проблемами, которые раньше стояли и перед нами. [...] Они обладали инструментами, каких не было у нас или мы не знали как ими пользоваться. Им удалось сделать из лингвистики основу теории и одновременно терапевтический инструмент. Это дало им двойной контроль над психиатрическими явлениями. Они сделали то, что мы по глупости просмотрели и сегодня я это понимаю. [...]

В действительности, однако множество явлений, описание которых в 1955 году было сложным, в 1975 году оказалось намного проще. Так держать!".
