В свете сказанного выше надлежит интерпретировать, несомненно, и следующий факт, сообщаемый Брайаном. «Когда в стране (у зулусов) разражается эпидемия, собираются матери со всей местности, причем каждая несет на спине ребенка. Они с пением отправляются к такому месту на берегу реки, где имеется большая песчаная отмель. Здесь они выкапывают большие ямы и в каждую сажают по ребенку и засыпают его песком по самую шею. Затем они разражаются стенаниями и причитаниями, обычными для погребения. Предполагается, что этим свершается умилостивление кого-то или чего-то, о чем туземцы теперь уже ничего не знают, и таким образом надеются положить конец эпидемии».

Я не думаю, что перед нами умилостивительный обряд: это скорее замена. Матери инсценируют погребение своих детей, чтобы спасти от угрожающей смерти, чтобы не пришлось погребать их реально. Подобным образом и депеша, извещающая о смерти мальчика, нейтрализует дурное влияние, которое должно было вызвать его смерть.

Небезынтересно, быть может, отметить в заключение, что рассмотренные в данной главе представления относятся к тому, что мы назвали аффективной категорией сверхъестественного, поскольку по крайней мере общие для всех этих представлений элементы имеют и эмоциональную природу. Отсюда их взаимное сходство, сходство с нарушениями, со зловещими прдзнаменованиями, с околдованием и т. д. Отсюда и сходство операций, при помощи которых первобытные люди во всех родственных между собой случаях стараются защититься против дурных влияний, угрожающих им или обрушившихся на них, одним словом, очиститься. Как только представление подобного рода начинает занимать внимание первобытного человека и волновать его, немедленно появляется защитная реакция в той форме (предписаний, табу, очистительных обрядов, ограничений, жертвоприношений, замен и т. д.), в какой она унаследована от предков и в какой она сохранена и продиктована священной традицией.
