Рене Жирар родился в 1923 году во Франции. Получил филологическое образование в одном из самых престижных учебных заведений Франции — Ecole des Chartes. В 1947 году переехал в США, где защитил диссертацию на тему «Американское общественное мнение и Франция, 1940–1943». Сделал блестящую карьеру как преподаватель сравнительного литературоведения. С 1976 года — профессор сравнительного литературоведения в университете Джонса Гопкииса (Балтимор). В настоящее время — professor emeritus Стэнфордского университета.

Основы антропологической концепции Жирара были заложены в первой его книге «Ложь романтизма и правда романа» (1961). Уже в этой литературно-критической работе, посвященной Сервантесу, Стендалю, Прусту и Достоевскому, Жирар наметил свою теорию «миметического желания». Эта теория была развернута, дополнена и опробована на широчайшем антропологическом и культурном материале в книге «Насилие и священное» (1972), сделавшей Жирара знаменитым. Затем теория Жирара была детализирована в книге «Сокровенное от создания мира» (1978). Главные темы этой книги — общая антропология; иудаизм и христианство; проблемы современной психологии. Концепция Жирара обрела законченность в книге «Козел отпущения» (1982), где Жирар обосновывает уникальную роль христианской религии в истории человечества.
