Возможно, это был первый эпистемологический режим, в котором структурную роль играли машины. Они не просто исполняли делегированные им задачи, но служили носителями эпистемических добродетелей и играли роль этических протезов . Они должны были заменить ошибающегося, подверженного субъективным искажениям, быстро устающего и колеблющегося человека. Строго говоря, у машин и нет выбора, быть ли добродетельными. Вместо усилия по самоограничению и аскезы – отсутствие выбора, вместо свободы воли – свобода от воли.

Выбор «самости» в качестве перевода self продиктован рядом соображений.
