The results of investigations of the atmosphere, the surface and the upper layer of the soil of Mars are discussed on the basis of a preliminary analysis of measurement data obtained with the help of instrumentation installed on the orbital and descent vehicles Viking-1, -2. The results obtained contain comprehensive information on the structural parameters and composition of the atmosphere. Numerous images from the orbit and the planet's surface made it possible to improve essentially the existing notion of the structure and minerology of the Martian surface. For the first time, a comprehensive complex of data of direct observations on the surface of the planet has been obtained which characterizes the properties of the surface and the lower atmosphere. The results considered are of great importance for understanding the weather and climate-forming processes on Mars; they open up new perspectives from the point of view of the comparative meteorology of planets.
