Книга представляет собой собрание эссе на тему насущных проблем истории искусства как практики возобновления смысла применительно к визуальной реальности прошлого. Ориентиром в этом начинании служит предельно монументальная фигура Эрнста Гомбриха – историка, но прежде всего теоретика истории искусства, достигшего в своей научной дискурсивности уровня подлинного творчества и обнажившего перформативные корни научного знания как такового. В лице Гомбриха и в сюжетах его взаимоотношений с иными личностями – Поппером, Варбургом, Панофским, Митчеллом, Прециози, Виндом и многими другими – обнаруживаются и сущностные аспекты науки как межличностной коммуникации внутри и по краям разнообразных концептуальных контекстов, что дает специфические иллюзорные эффекты, родственные эффектам достоверности, на которые, как обычно считается, способны лишь изобразительные искусства.
Книга будет полезна специалистам в области эстетики, психологии и философии, а равно и всем, интересующимся искусством и его интерпретацией.

Это довольно примечательное учебное заведение, основанное в XVIII в. еще Марией-Терезией (откуда название). Вначале – строго аристократическое, а во времена Гомбриха – подчеркнуто демократическое («просто хорошее») и не утратившее своего гуманитарно-гуманистического пафоса (латынь и греческий преподавались на должном уровне).
