Ричард Вайнен, историк и профессор Королевского колледжа в Лондоне, видит в этих событиях не обособленную веху, но целый исторический период, продлившийся с середины 1960-х до конца 1970-х годов. Это – первая попытка рассмотреть в транснациональной перспективе всю совокупность протестных движений и восстаний, разворачивавшихся в благополучных индустриальных странах – Соединенных Штатах Америки, Франции, Великобритании и Западной Германии.
Автор пытается выяснить, почему развитые демократии Запада вдруг оказались на грани нервного срыва и как протесты повлияли на различные социальные группы – молодежь, женщин, рабочих, сексуальные меньшинства. Отдельное место отведено тому сочетанию революционного насилия и политического соглашательства, которое продемонстрировал 1968 год – время радикальных требований и несбывшихся надежд.
