Гавайские друзья говорили, что до того, как ее здоровье сильно ухудшилось в последние годы жизни, было очень сложно догадаться о том, что она пьет. «Она была алкоголиком, и Сьюзен узнала об этом спустя много лет от сестры», – писала Акоселла в статье, напечатанной в New Yorker в 2000-м. Источником информации была сама Сьюзен. Однако Дон Левин вспоминал, что, узнав, что Милдред уплывает на корабле в круиз, заметила, что было бы любопытно узнать, проводят ли на круизных кораблях встречи групп Анонимных Алкоголиков, что свидетельствует о том, что Зонтаг все знала от самой матери. Давид Рифф вспоминал, что его мать сопровождала свою мать на встречи Анонимных Алкоголиков в Гонолулу. Вполне возможно, что Сьюзен умом-то все знала, но вот эмоционально так и не смогла принять.
