Особенность богемы состояла в том, что она постоянно сталкивала эти противоположности. Богема пыталась (если не всегда на практике, то по крайней мере в теории) преодолеть как вульгарность культурного популизма, так и элитарность трудного искусства. Живописное сравнение Беньямина точно передает суть этой попытки и ее мотивы: неизбежность несовершенства и страдания должна внушить нам ощущение трагизма — и в то же время надежды. Героизм богемных художников заключался в их неизменной верности этому идеалу. Найти им определение оказывалось невозможно потому, что они стремились к утопии.
