Основной массив опубликованных материалов составляли документы из бывшего Центрального партийного архива с его жесточайшими ограничениями, а также из Государственного архива РФ (ранее — Центральный государственный архив Октябрьской революции); однако, в отличие от предыдущих публикаций, там были материалы из западных архивов, газет и других источников. Только за период с 1995 по 2005 год вышло в свет более 40 увесистых томов, содержавших документы по истории российских политических партий в конце дореволюционной эпохи. Кроме того, был опубликован ряд замечательных собраний архивных материалов о крестьянских восстаниях времен Гражданской войны, о коллективизации, об органах госбезопасности, о международном коммунистическом движении, а также переписка руководителей государства. Большинство этих публикаций состоялось благодаря совместным усилиям западных и российских ученых и архивистов.
