Книга известного российского востоковеда профессора А.А. Маслова рассказывает об инициациях и мистериях традиционного Китая, связанных с культами бессмертных, путешествиями в загробный мир, погребальными ритуалами и формированием особого духовного климата, где самое обыденное и мирское оказывается возвышенно-священным и наиболее значимым. Особую роль здесь играют магические перевоплощения медиумов и магов в полудухов-полулюдей, культ драконов, змей и птиц. Многие философские учения, такие как конфуцианство и даосизм, представляли собой развитие этих мистериальных учений и откровений древних мистиков.

Алексей Александрович Маслов — историк-востоковед, академик РАЕН, профессор, доктор исторических наук, заведующий кафедрой всеобщей истории Российского университета дружбы народов, приглашенный профессор ряда американских и европейских университетов. Выпускник ИСАА при МГУ, долгое время работал в Институте Дальнего Востока РАН, более десяти лет обучался в Китае в буддийских и даосских общинах. Специалист по духовной культуре и истории стран Восточной Азии, мистическим культам Китая. Автор более десятка книг и многочисленных статей.
