Средневековые герольды не проводили различия между львами (leo) и леопардами (leopardus), как правило, именуя английские геральдические символы «леопардами», однако в Новое время этот термин официально был заменен «львами».

Правила геральдики требуют, чтобы при совмещении нескольких гербов в одном щите более «достойные» гербы располагались в поле щита выше и правее прочих. Следует учитывать, что правая сторона указывается с позиции держателя щита, что соответствует левой стороне для зрителя. При четырехчастном разделении герба, которое предпринял Эдуард III, первая (верхняя правая) четверть была выделена для лилий, следовательно, французский герб получил более достойное место, чем английский.
