Книга профессора Калифорнийского университета в Беркли Юрия Слёзкина, автора уже изданного в «НЛО» интеллектуального бестселлера «Эра Меркурия: Евреи в современном мире» (2005), посвящена загадке культурной чуждости. На протяжении нескольких веков власть, наука и литература вновь и вновь открывали, истолковывали и пытались изменить жизнь коренных народов Севера. Эти столкновения не проходили бесследно для представлений русских/россиян о самих себе, о цивилизации, о человечестве. Отображавшиеся в «арктических зеркалах» русского самосознания фигуры — иноземец, иноверец, инородец, нацмен, первобытный коммунист, последний абориген — предстают в книге продуктом сложного взаимодействия, не сводимого к клише колониального господства и эксплуатации.
