Книга профессора Калифорнийского университета в Беркли Юрия Слёзкина, автора уже изданного в «НЛО» интеллектуального бестселлера «Эра Меркурия: Евреи в современном мире» (2005), посвящена загадке культурной чуждости. На протяжении нескольких веков власть, наука и литература вновь и вновь открывали, истолковывали и пытались изменить жизнь коренных народов Севера. Эти столкновения не проходили бесследно для представлений русских/россиян о самих себе, о цивилизации, о человечестве.
