И все же, когда я их писал, меня не покидало то чувство неловкости, которое я испытывал еще в бытность свою студентом. Нам приходилось заучивать планы писем и составлять карты путешествий Павла. Преподаватели часами обсуждали хронологию жизни Павла и вопрос о том, пошел ли он в южную или в северную Галатию. Когда я сам стал преподавателем, то постепенно понял, что большая часть этого материала действительно важна, но вместе с тем я не забыл, сколь слабо такая тематика способствует любви к Павлу (а некоторым моим однокурсникам и вовсе помешала оценить его наследие). Евангелия обладают естественной притягательностью, а письма Павла требуют вдумчивого и кропотливого чтения. Поэтому я добавляю еще одну вводную главу — более личного плана, о наследии Павла и о нем самом, кто более всех своих современников помог людям увидеть значение Иисуса Христа.

Какие образы появляются при мысли о Павле? Большинство известных картин и скульптурных изображений Павла — творческие разработки ярких эпизодов из Деяний Апостолов: Павел падает с лошади, когда ему является Христос; спорит с философами в Афинах; терпит кораблекрушение по пути в Рим. Или так: Павел, рано полысевший, пишет письмо при дрожащем пламени свечи. А образ Павла с мечом навеян преданием, согласно которому апостол принял мученическую смерть: был обезглавлен в Риме.
