Некоторые австралийские племена разделяются на 4 экзогамные группы. Законы экзогамии требуют, чтобы член первой группы вступал в брак с членом второй группы, а член третьей группы — с членом четвертой группы. Кунов объясняет эти обычаи, показывая, что, когда обычай устанавливает, что в племени, которое разделено на две экзогамные единицы, и в котором лишь членам одного и того же поколения позволено вступать в брак между собою, естественно разовьются такие условия, как оказывающиеся налицо в Австралии, если у каждой группы есть название, и если один ряд названий служит для обозначения первого, третьего, пятого поколений, а другой ряд — для обозначения второго, четвертого, шестого поколений и т. д. Если мы обозначим два племенные подразделения буквами А и В, а поколения — цифрами 1 и 2, то названия четырех подразделений будут А 1, А 2, B 1и В 2; и в браках, в которых на первом месте указан пол, определяющий группу, к которой принадлежит потомство, мы находим, что:

А 1должен вступить в брак с В 1, и его дети суть А 2.
