Морские экспедиции, связывавшие Европейскую Россию и российские территории в Северной Америке, анализируются автором в контексте развития мировой науки и исследуются как своеобразные научные «лаборатории» по изучению Мирового океана, а их руководители и участники, знаменитые русские моряки И.Ф. Крузенштерн, В.М. Головнин, Ф.Ф. Беллинсгаузен, М.П. Лазарев, Ф.П. Литке, Ф.П. Врангель, – как «офицеры-исследователи», представители нового типа научного социума. Немало внимания в монографии автор уделил анализу социальных структур Российского флота, в частности влияния систем патроната и непотизма на историю кругосветных плаваний.
Написанная живым, ярким языком, монография адресована не только специалистам по российской и западноевропейской истории, географам, этнографам, культурологам и социологам, но и самым широким читательским кругам.
The monograph is devoted to the participation of the Russian Navy in the development and study of the World Ocean, which is one of the brightest pages of the Russian naval history and science. The author, D.N. Kopelev, a well-known St. Petersburg historian and Doctor of Historical Sciences, focused on key issues of the institutional history of the world circumnavigation, the geopolitical expansion of the Russian Empire in the World Ocean, the transfer of Western European technologies to the Russian ground.
The author analyzes sea expeditions that connected European Russia and Russian territories in North America in the context of the world science development and examines them as a kind of scientific “laboratories” for the study of the World Ocean. Their leaders and participants, the famous Russian sailors I.F. Kruzenshtern, V.M. Golovnin, F.F. Bellingshausen, M.P. Lazarev, EP. Litke, F.P. Wrangel are also represented as “research officers”, representatives of a new type of scientific society. A considerable part of the monograph is devoted to the analysis of the Russian Fleet social structures – in particular, the influence of patronage and nepotism systems on the history of circumnavigation.
The monograph, written in a vivid language, is addressed not only to specialists in Russian and Western European history, geographers, ethnographers, cultural scientists and sociologists, but to the widest range of readers as well.
