Две примечательные особенности выделяют остров Пасхи среди всех прочих островов Тихоокеанского полушария: уникальное географическое положение и редкостные археологические памятники. Можно ли считать случайным такое сочетание географической и археологической уникальности? Тихий океан насчитывает десятки тысяч островов и многие из них больше и куда более доступны влиянию извне. Но только на острове Пасхи обнаружены следы доевропейской письменности, культовые сооружения из огромных камней разной формы, обтесанных и пригнанных друг к другу с поразительной точностью, сотни исполинских антропоморфных статуй. С тех пор, как в 1722 году европейцы обнаружили остров, идет спор — являются ли эти замечательные памятники плодом местного развития или влияния извне. Выдвинуто множество гипотез в защиту и той и другой точки зрения.
