24 декабря 1986 года в центральной советской печати появилось следующее примечательное «редакционное» сообщение: «Академик Сахаров обратился к советскому руководству с просьбой разрешить ему возвращение из Горького в Москву. В результате рассмотрения этой просьбы компетентными организациями, включая Академию наук СССР и административные органы, было принято решение удовлетворить эту просьбу. Одновременно Президиум Верховного Совета СССР принял решение о помиловании гражданки Боннэр. Таким образом, им обоим предоставлена возможность вернуться в Москву, а А. Д. Сахарову — и активно включиться в академическую жизнь, теперь — на московском направлении (что означало это «направление», понять было невозможно. — Г. Ч., Л. Д.) деятельности АН СССР. Утром 23 декабря А. Д. Сахаров и Е. Г. Боннэр поездом прибыли в Москву». Приведенный текст был свидетельством, что сообщение готовилось в спешке растерянными чиновниками, из чего вытекали его нелогичность и сбивчивость.
