Книга Игоря Ефимова, известного писателя и философа, эмигрировавшего в США почти сорок лет назад, рассказывает о тех сторонах жизни американского общества, которые постороннему взгляду не видны. Часто оказывается, что за фасадом успешного государства, претендующего на роль единственного полюса политической жизни планеты, кроются тяжелейшие проблемы и неразрешимые противоречия. Взгляд автора на внутренние процессы в американском обществе по-своему уникален: с одной стороны, это взгляд изнутри, а с другой – взгляд отстраненный, способный на взвешенные и даже нелицеприятные суждения. Автор последовательно рассматривает самые разные стороны социальной жизни – школу, семью, армию, суды, адвокатуру, дипломатию и т. д. – и делает неутешительные выводы. Корень проблем – в отходе американской демократии от своих родовых принципов, захвате и манипулировании общественным мнением со стороны влиятельных групп юристов, политиков и представителей корпораций.
Книга будет крайне полезна русскому читателю не только потому, что познакомит его с текущей американской повесткой дня и позволит сравнить ее с отечественной, но и потому, что она способна предостеречь от тех ошибок, которые были допущены в Соединенных Штатах и которых русское общество еще может избежать.
