Женщин русской деревни считали жертвами патриархального уклада и вместе с тем прославляли как образец силы, их также признавали бесценным источником, питавшим великую русскую культуру. Но как они смотрят сами на себя? Как их рассказы и песни говорят об их ценностях, желаниях и мотивах? Собеседницами авторов этого исследования в фольклорных экспедициях, проходивших в российских деревнях, были женщины, принадлежащие к разным советским поколениям: 1899—1916 (до Октябрьской революции), 1917—1929 (до начала тотальной коллективизации деревни) и 1930—1950 (те, чья молодость пришлась на послевоенное время, а период социальной активности на последнее советское двадцатилетие). Различия в судьбах женщин, принадлежащих к этим трем генерациям, значительны, как различны их личный опыт и вынесенные из него жизненные кредо. Актуализация этих различий и составила основную задачу данной монографии. В ней тематизированы наиболее значимые сферы женского знания и дискурса: темы ухаживания и свадьбы, мелодраматизм песенного репертуара и трансгрессивность частушки, магические и религиозные практики, межпоколенченские отношения родства и свойства, отношения с мертвыми. Эти темы рассматриваются на фоне динамики социальных иерархий, определяющей жизнь поколений российского деревни ХХ века.
