В книге на примере двуязычного сообщества мариупольских (приазовских) греков рассматривается роль языка в процессе этнической самоидентификации. Часть сообщества, урумы, говорит на урумском (одном из тюркских языков), тогда как родной язык другой части сообщества, румеев, — румейский (греческая группа индоевропейской семьи). В монографии впервые предпринят анализ идентичности данной группы в рамках конструктивистского подхода к этничности, а сохранение языка рассматривается в контексте языковой лояльности группы. Анализ же самосознания тюркоязычных греков помогает лучше понять этнические процессы, в том числе и в стабильных сообществах, обладающих непротиворечивыми признаками.
Работа основана на полевых материалах автора и архивных источниках и вводит в научный оборот значительное число новых данных.
Для этнологов, лингвистов, социологов, а также всех, кто интересуется этническими процессами на постсоветских территориях и сохранением исчезающих языков.
