On the table beside me burned a lamp, and near it lay a little box. It was of no remarkable character, and I had seen it frequently before, for it was the property of the family physician; but how came it there , upon my table, and why did I shudder in regarding it? These things were in no manner to be accounted for, and my eyes at length dropped to the open pages of a book, and to a sentence underscored therein.

The words were the singular but simple ones of the poet Ebn Zaiat(эти слова были странными, но простыми словами поэта Ибн-Зайата) : – “Dicebant mihi sodales si sepulchrum amicae visitarem, curas meas aliquantulum fore levatas ( мне говорили собратья, что, если я навещу могилу подруги, горе мое немного облегчится; лат. ) .” Why then, as I perused them, did the hairs of my head erect themselves on end(почему же, когда я внимательно читал их, волосы моей головы поднимались на кончиках) , and the blood of my body become congealed within my veins(а кровь моего тела стыла в жилах: «становилась замороженной»)?

But I could not force it open; and in my tremor, it slipped from my hands, and fell heavily, and burst into pieces; and from it, with a rattling sound, there rolled out some instruments of dental surgery, intermingled with thirty-two small, white and ivory-looking substances that were scattered to and fro about the floor.

During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year(в течение целого унылого, темного и беззвучного дня осенней порой года) , when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens(когда тучи висели угнетающе низко в небесах) , I had been passing alone, on horseback(я проезжал один, верхом: «на лошадиной спине»; horse – лошадь; back – спина; задняя часть чего-либо ) , through a singularly dreary tract of country(по исключительно безотрадной деревенской дороге; country – страна, край, «загород», деревня ) ; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on(и наконец оказался: «нашел себя», когда тени вечера приблизились = пала вечерняя тень; to draw on – наступать, близиться от to draw – тянуть ) , within view of the melancholy House of Usher(в виду меланхоличного = унылого Дома Ашеров).

During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.

I know not how it was(я не знаю, как это было = в чем дело) – but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit(но с первым взглядом на это здание чувство невыносимого уныния охватило мою душу) .
