С этого места и далее дух вместо the spirit несколько раз отмечен как the thing – нечто.

В данном случае The great Inquest («большое дознание»), но далее The grand Jury (Большое жюри) – коронерское расследование, дознание, в ходе которого собирают материалы и свидетельские показания о преступлении.

Так в тексте: Sir Henry Cromwell of Finchingbrook in the countie of Huntington. Под Finchingbrook следует понимать Hinchingbrooke – женский монастырь в окрестностях Хантингдона, который в 1538 г. выкупил отец Генри Кромвеля. Последний перестроил его под свою резиденцию – Hinchingbrooke House . После некоторой переделки в XIX в. она сохранилась до наших дней.

Статут о колдовстве, волшебстве и ведовстве ( An Act agaynst Conjuracons, Inchantments and Witchecraftes ) был введен с 1 июня 1563 г. (5 Eliz. I, cap. 16). Статут был отредактирован в направлении ужесточения и переиздан преемником Елизаветы, королем Яковом в 1604 г. Отменен только в 1736 г.
