I don’t know the names of the flowers growing round Nqong’s bath. The two little squatty things out in the desert are the other two gods that Old Man Kangaroo spoke to early in the morning. That thing with the letters on it is Old Man Kangaroo’s pouch. He had to have a pouch just as he had to have legs.

THIS, O Best Beloved, is another story of the High and Far-Off Times (это, О Самые Любименькие, еще одна история о Высоких и Далеких Временах = о Давным-давно Прошедших Временах ). In the very middle of those times was a Stickly-Prickly Hedgehog (в самый разгар тех времен жил да был Еж Колючки-Торчком; to stick — торчать; prickly — колючий ), and he lived on the banks of the turbid Amazon (и он жил на берегах мутной Амазонки), eating shelly snails and things (питаясь улитками с раковинами и тому подобным).

And he had a friend (и у него была подруга), a Slow-Solid Tortoise (Медленная-Твердая Черепаха; tortoise — черепаха /сухопутная/ ), who lived on the banks of the turbid Amazon (которая жила на берегах мутной Амазонки), eating green lettuces and things (питаясь зеленым салатом-латуком и тому подобным). And so that was all right, Best Beloved (и так это = все было нормально, Очень Любименькие). Do you see (понятно)?

When he could not catch deer or monkeys he would eat frogs and beetles; and when he could not catch frogs and beetles he went to his Mother Jaguar, and she told him how to eat hedgehogs and tortoises.

She said to him ever so many times, graciously waving her tail, ‘My son, when you find a Hedgehog you must drop him into the water and then he will uncoil, and when you catch a Tortoise you must scoop him out of his shell with your paw.’ And so that was all right, Best Beloved.

One beautiful night on the banks of the turbid Amazon (одной прекрасной ночью на берегах мутной Амазонки), Painted Jaguar found Stickly-Prickly Hedgehog and Slow-Solid Tortoise sitting under the trunk of a fallen tree (Пестрый Ягуар нашел Ежа Колючки-Торчком и Медленную-Твердую Черепаху, которые сидели под стволом поваленного дерева). Now which of you is Hedgehog and which is Tortoise? because, to save my spots, I can’t tell.’

‘Are you sure of what your Mummy told you (ты уверен в том, что тебе говорила твоя Мамочка)?’ said Stickly-Prickly Hedgehog (спросил Еж Колючки-Торчком). ‘Are you quite sure (ты совершенно уверен)? ‘Are you sure of what your Mummy told you?’ said Slow-and-Solid Tortoise. ‘Are you quite sure? Perhaps she said that when you water a Hedgehog you must drop him into your paw, and when you meet a Tortoise you must shell him till he uncoils.’
