Существовал ли Гомер в действительности?
Историки по сей день не пришли к единому мнению на этот счёт.
Но в одном нет и не может быть сомнений: приписываемые великому «слепому аэду» эпические поэмы «Илиада» и «Одиссея» раз и навсегда изменили облик европейской литературы.
Все мы помним историю прекрасной Елены и неистового Ахиллеса, мужественного Гектора и благородного Патрокла. Всем нам знакома и история опасных приключений хитроумного Одиссея, обречённого богами-олимпийцами на десятилетние скитания.
«Илиаду» и «Одиссею» пытались анализировать, толковать и интерпретировать бессчётное число раз. Их называли то аллегориями, то поэтическими хрониками реальных исторических событий, то рифмованными записями мифов.
Но что они такое в действительности?
