Опираясь на труды Сунь-цзы, Фукидида, Тита Ливия, Макиавелли, Гоббса и других великих мыслителей прошлого, известный американский публицист Роберт Каплан стремиться доказать, что в мире с нестабильными государствами и неопределенным будущим внешняя политика должна основываться на «нравственности результатов». Ведущую роль в мире после окончания холодной войны автор отводит США, которым, по его мнению, следует ориентироваться на отцов-основателей Америки, веривших, что хорошее правление возможно только на основе «тонкого понимания страстей человеческих». Примером мудрого руководства государством могут также служить Рузвельт во время Второй мировой войны и особенно Черчилль, в высшей степени наделенный тем, что Каплан вслед за Макиавелли называет «предвидением беды». В поисках мудрости, применимой к современной геополитике, Каплан обращается к древним философам и полководцам. В классических трудах он находит исторические примеры и логические обоснования того, что для сохранения баланса сил необходимы военная мощь, скрытность и хитрость. Эту модель он применяет и к бизнесу, показывая, какую пользу могут извлечь из уроков прошлого сегодняшние лидеры. Проницательная полемическая работа Каплана, несомненно, станет поводом для оживленных дискуссий.
