The Time Traveller turned to us (Путешественник по Времени повернулся к нам). 'Where are the matches (где спички)?' he said (спросил он). He lit one (он зажег одну) and spoke over his pipe, puffing (и заговорил, дымя трубкой; to puff — налетать, дуть порывами /о ветре/; выпускать табачный дым, дымить ). 'To tell you the truth (говоря по правде) ... I hardly believe it myself (я и сам с трудом верю) ....

And yet (но все же)...

The Editor stood up with a sigh. 'What a pity it is you're not a writer of stories!' he said, putting his hand on the Time Traveller's shoulder.

'You don't believe it?'

'Well——'

'I thought not.'

The Time Traveller turned to us. 'Where are the matches?' he said. He lit one and spoke over his pipe, puffing. 'To tell you the truth ... I hardly believe it myself.... And yet...'

His eye fell with a mute inquiry upon the withered white flowers upon the little table (его глаза упали = устремились с немым вопросом на увядшие белые цветы на маленьком столике; mute — немой; inquiry —вопрос, наведение справок; to wither — вянуть, сохнуть, увядать ). Then he turned over the hand holding his pipe (потом он повернул руку, державшую трубку), and I saw he was looking at some half-healed scars on his knuckles (и я увидел, что он смотрит на наполовину = едва зажившие раны на своих пальцах; to heal — вылечивать, исцелять;заживать; scar — рубец, шрам; царапина, рана ).

The Medical Man rose (Доктор встал), came to the lamp (подошел к лампе), and examined the flowers (и /стал/ рассматривать цветы). 'The gynaeceum's odd (странный пестик),' he said (сказал он). The Psychologist leant forward to see (Психолог наклонился вперед посмотреть; tolean—наклонять/ся/, нагибать/ся/ ), holding out his hand for a specimen (протягивая руку за одним из образцов = цветков; specimen— образец, экземпляр ).

The Time Traveller hesitated. Then suddenly: 'Certainly not.'

'Where did you really get them?' said the Medical Man.

The Time Traveller put his hand to his head (Путешественник по Времени приложил руку к голове). He spoke like one (он заговорил, как человек) who was trying to keep hold of an idea that eluded him (который старается удержать мысль, ускользающую от него; to elude — избежать, спастись; ускользать ). 'They were put into my pocket by Weena (их положила мне в карман Уина), when I travelled into Time (когда я путешествовал по Времени).' He stared round the room (он оглядел комнату). 'I'm damned if it isn't all going (все плывет перед глазами, черт возьми: «будь я проклят, если все это не идет»; togo— идти; происходить; быть пораженным болезнью, гнить /о растениях, урожае/; ослабевать, ухудшаться, сдавать /о живых существах, их органах, способностях/: I could feel my brain going — я чувствовал, что мой ум перестает работать; to damn— проклинать ). This room and you and the atmosphere of every day is too much for my memory (эта комната, вы и атмосфера каждого дня = знакомаяобстановка — слишком много для моей памяти). Did I ever make a Time Machine, or a model of a Time Machine (делал ли я когда-нибудь Машину Времени или ее модель)? Or is it all only a dream (или все это только сон)? The Time Traveller put his hand to his head. He spoke like one who was trying to keep hold of an idea that eluded him. 'They were put into my pocket by Weena, when I travelled into Time.' He stared round the room. 'I'm damned if it isn't all going. This room and you and the atmosphere of every day is too much for my memory. Did I ever make a Time Machine, or a model of a Time Machine? Or is it all only a dream? They say life is a dream, a precious poor dream at times—but I can't stand another that won't fit. It's madness. And where did the dream come from? ... I must look at that machine. If there is one!'

He caught up the lamp swiftly, and carried it, flaring red, through the door into the corridor. We followed him. There in the flickering light of the lamp was the machine sure enough, squat, ugly, and askew; a thing of brass, ebony, ivory, and translucent glimmering quartz. Solid to the touch—for I put out my hand and felt the rail of it—and with brown spots and smears upon the ivory, and bits of grass and moss upon the lower parts, and one rail bent awry.

The Time Traveller put the lamp down on the bench (Путешественник по Времени поставил лампу на скамью), and ran his hand along the damaged rail (и ощупал поврежденный поручень; to damage — повреждать, портить ). 'It's all right now (теперь ясно),' he said (сказал он). 'The story I told you was true (то, что я вам рассказал, правда). I'm sorry to have brought you out here in the cold (простите, что я привел вас в этот холод; tobringout— вытаскивать /из кармана/, выводить /из комнаты/ ).' He took up the lamp (он взял лампу), and, in an absolute silence (и в полной тишине), we returned to the smoking-room (мы вернулись обратно в курительную). He came into the hall with us and helped the Editor on with his coat (он вышел с нами в холл и помог Редактору /надеть/ пальто).
