Так было во время войн начала XIII века, которые вели Иоанн, король Англии, и Филипп II Август, король Франции: союзники Иоанна при Ла-Рошели не слишком доверяли королю, обещавшему заплатить им за верность в военное время; была заключена сделка: деньги поместили на хранение в дом тамплиеров в Ла-Рошели, чтобы те потом раздали их. Король Иоанн также заимствовал большие суммы у тамплиеров на протяжении всего своего правления, обеспечивая эти займы драгоценными изделиями из золота. Фактически он закладывал драгоценности короны.
