"Come, friend (пойдем, друг)," said Kahp-too-óo-yoo. "It is well for brothers to share with brothers (правильно братьям делиться с братьями). When they had gathered each a load of wood (когда они собрали каждый по ноше хвороста), and lashed it with rawhide thongs (и крепко связали их сыромятными ремнями; to lash — крепко связывать /обыкн. lash together/; привязывать /to, down, on — к чему-либо/ ) in bundles upon their shoulders (в вязанки себе на плечи; bundle — узел, связка; пачка; вязанка; пучок ), they trudged home (/то/ они потащились домой)—Kahp-too-óo-yoo carrying the deer on top of his wood (/при этом/ Кахп-ту-ó-йу нес оленя поверх своей вязанки: «своих дров»). Several different days when they went to the mountain together, the very same thing came to pass. Kahp-too-óo-yoo killed each time a deer; and each time the friend came home with nothing, refusing all offers to share as brothers. And he grew more jealous and more sullen every day.

At last he came again to invite Kahp-too-óo-yoo to go (наконец он пришел снова пригласить Кахп-ту-ó-йу пойти /на охоту/); but this time it was with an evil purpose that he asked (но на этот раз он просил со злым умыслом; evil —злостный; злонамеренный; зловредный ). "Friend Kahp-too-óo-yoo (друг), now I will prove you (сейчас я испытаю тебя; to prove — испытывать, пробовать ) if you are truly my friend (в самом ли деле ты мой друг), for I do not think it (потому что я так не думаю)."

"Surely (конечно)," said Kahp-too-óo-yoo, "if there is any way to prove myself (если есть какой-нибудь способ доказать/подтвердить; way — способ, средство, метод ), I will do it gladly (я с радостью это сделаю; gladly — радостно, весело, охотно, с удовольствием ), for truly I am your friend (ведь я на самом деле друг тебе; truly — на самом деле, истинно, поистине )."

At last he came again to invite Kahp-too-óo-yoo to go; but this time it was with an evil purpose that he asked. Then again the same things happened. Again the unsuccessful friend refused to take a share of Kahp-too-óo-yoo's deer; and when he had sat long without a word, he said:

"Friend Kahp-too-óo-yoo, now I will prove you if you are truly my friend, for I do not think it."

"Surely," said Kahp-too-óo-yoo, "if there is any way to prove myself, I will do it gladly, for truly I am your friend."

"Then come, and we will play a game together (тогда пойдем и сыграем вместе в игру), and with that I will prove you (и тем /самым/ я испытаю тебя)."

"It is well (хорошо)! But what game shall we play (но в какую игру мы будем играть), for here we have nothing (ведь здесь у нас ничего нет)?"

Near them stood a broken pine-tree (возле них стояла поломанная сосна; to break; to stand ), with one great arm from its twisted body (с единственной огромной ветвью, /торчавшей/ из ее изогнутого ствола; arm — рука; главная ветвь /о тех ветвях, на которые непосредственно разделяется ствол/; to twist — виться, изгибаться; вертеть ). And looking at it (и, глядя на нее), the false friend said (неверный друг сказал):

"I see nothing but to play the gallo race (ничего не остается, кроме как скакать наперегонки: «я не вижу ничего, кроме как сыграть в гонки галло »); and because we have no horses (и так как у нас нет лошадей) we will ride this arm of the pine-tree (мы будем скакать верхом на этой сосновой ветке; to ride — ехать верхом; сидеть верхом; кататься, качаться ) —first I will ride (сначала я поскачу), and then you (а затем ты)."

"I see nothing but to play the gallo race; and because we have no horses we will ride this arm of the pine-tree—first I will ride, and then you."

But the false friend bewitched the pine (но неверный друг заколдовал сосну), and suddenly it grew in a moment to the very sky (и внезапно она выросла за мгновение до самого неба; in a moment — мгновенно, за одну минуту ), carrying Kahp-too-óo-yoo (унося /с собой/ Кахп-ту-ó-йу).

So he climbed the pine-tree, and sat astride the limb as upon a horse, and rode, reaching over to the ground as if to pick up the chicken.

"Now you," he said, coming down; and Kahp-too-óo-yoo climbed the tree and rode on the swinging branch. But the false friend bewitched the pine, and suddenly it grew in a moment to the very sky, carrying Kahp-too-óo-yoo.

"We do this to one another (мы делаем это друг для друга)," taunted the false friend (передразнил лживый друг; to taunt — насмехаться, говорить колкости; дразнить ), as the tree shot up (в то время, когда дерево взметнулось вверх; to shoot — стрелять; /зд./ внезапно появиться, пронестись, промелькнуть, промчаться ); and taking the wood (и, забрав дрова), and the deer which Kahp-too-óo-yoo had killed (и оленя, которого Кахп-ту-ó-йу убил), he went to the village (он отправился в деревню). There the sisters met him, and asked (там сестры встретили его и спросили; to meet ):

"Where is our brother (где наш брат)?"

"Truly I know not (право /же/, я не знаю), for he went northwest and I southwest (потому как он ушел на северо-запад, а я — на юго-запад); and though I waited long at the meeting-place (и хотя я ждал долго в условленном месте: «месте встречи»), he did not come (он не пришел). Probably he will soon return (вероятно, он скоро вернется). But take of this deer which I killed (но возьмите /часть/ от этого оленя, которого я убил), for sisters should share the labors of brothers (ведь сестры разделяют труды = плоды трудов братьев)."
