Mr Heinz, how nice to see you. Come in and take a seat. Would you like some coffee?
Yes please, that’s kind of you. Are you the sales contact for Washago?
Yes, that’s right. Are you staving here long?
I don’t think so. Unfortunately, just three or four days, time to catch up on all my business contacts.
Are vou enjoying vour stay so far?
Yes, very much, thank vou. The hotel is quiet and right in the town centre. How was the meeting yesterday morning — I’m afraid I arrived late — the plane was delayed by 3 hours.
It doesn’t matter. It was very interesting, thank vou. and the marketing team had developed a lot of their sales pitch.
Would vou mind if I smoked?
I’m sorry, but it’s company policy to be a non-smoking area. If you like, there’s a smoking room on the first floor we could go to.
Nevermind, it’s better for me anyway.
Knock, knock, knock.

Come in!... Ah, this is my assistant, Simon. Simon, this is Mr Heinz of Cleano. Pleased to meet you. Could I bother vou one minute. Anne?
Yes, of course.
My parents-in-law are coming next week. May I take next Tuesday off?
I’m sorry but I’d rather you didn’t. We have a backlog of work which we simply have to get through before the Managing Director gets back from his trip to Sydney on Wednesday morning.
Would vou mind if I left early on Tuesday, then? Say, at 5pm?
Sure, go ahead. We should have finished the worst of it by then. Simon: Thank you very much. I’ll work late on Monday if needs be.
Right. Now, Mr Heinz...

Dialogue
Hubert and Sally review recent developments, and discuss one or two points.
Hubert: Right, Sally. Let’s get going. What can I get you?
Sally: That’s very kind of you, just a cup of tea, please. I’m afraid I haven’t got the latest
blueprint for the new factory layout, it’s not quite ready. I’m sure that Patrick will be able to bring it to us during the afternoon.
Hubert: How would you like it?
Sally: Just milk and two sugar lumps, please.
Hubert: Here you are. It doesn’t matter - if not, we can pick it up later. Have you got all the
calculations ready? I’m afraid I can’t make the meeting with the Japanese next week. I think we should look over all your slides and make sure you have the answers to any difficult questions.
Sally: Oh no! I’m really sorry but I’ve spilt my tea all over your in-tray.
Hubert: Don’t worry, it can happen to anyone. Here, have a handkerchief.
Sally: Thank you. Now, I need some advice. What do vou think I should sav if they ask
about reducing our purchasing prices? You know that most of our suppliers have increased their prices, so it’s difficult for the purchasing team to bring the prices down.
Hubert: If I were vou. I would talk to them about the bulk buying programme with our
subsidiary — that should bring prices down a little.
Sally: Yes, of course. Then again, what’s the best wav to justify the increase in overheads?
They’re not going to like that either!
Hubert: I think vou should point out that we are increasing production. Even if there is a
slight increase in overheads, it will be compensated by the high increase in production — so the costs should be covered.
Sally: Right.
Patrick: Excuse me. I’m sorrv I’m late but we had problems with the printer. Here is the
new factory layout.
Hubert: It’s all right. Thank you. These are very clear. Now we would seem to have every
thing we need to make our presentation. Do you have any other questions, Sally?
Sally: One or two. Could I ask if the project we are going to discuss next week is public
knowledge, or do the workers know nothing about it for now?
Hubert: Good question. For now, I think we should keep things under wraps, at least until
things are decided.
Sally: Would vou mind mv asking what effect all these changes might have on the job
