Скорее сама Реформация была глубоко личностным духовным процессом преобразования христианского вероучения, и реакция, вероятно, каждого ее участника была в известной степени непредсказуемой. Даже такой фанатичный протестант и вероучитель, как Жан Кальвин, оказался способным к соглашению с Генрихом Буллингером, в то время как переход Генриха VIII от католичества к англиканству был неожиданным после его осуждения Лютера в 1521 г. в трактате «В защиту семи таинств».

Отношение между сожительством у клириков и браками среди духовенства заслуживает дальнейшего изучения. Бет Пламмер отметила, что в 1521–1522 гг. женитьба на сожительницах составляла две трети от всех браков, заключенных представителями духовенства, в 1523–1527 гг. – около одной трети, и в 1528–1530 гг. – около половины. Такие браки определенно не могли улучшить положение жен священников. Замужество, вероятно, было лишь привлекательной возможностью узаконить уже существующие отношения.

Томас Мурнер (1475 – ок. 1537) – немецкий сатирик, поэт и переводчик. Написал едкую сатиру на Лютера «О большом глупце Лютере» (1522). Перевел «Институции» Гая на немецкий язык (1519) и написал юмористический учебник логики Chartiludium logicae (1507).
